9 Activities For Your Edinburgh Bucket List

History, modernity and lots of different cultures collide in Edinburgh, making a vibrant and exciting city. With so much choice, it’s easy to get stuck on what to do first. Our luxury hotel is sharing some of the best things to do for your Edinburgh bucket list.

Attend one of Edinburgh’s amazing festivals

It’s safe to say that we love a good festival here in Edinburgh. The most famous is definitely Fringe Festival in August, but our calendar is pretty full all year! There’s a reason we’re known as Festival City. You can choose from Jazz & Blues, to Books, to Film, to Hogmanay and so much more. Our city definitely comes to life in festival season, and it’s not to be missed.

Hike up Arthur’s Seat

Sitting in Holyrood Park, Arthur’s Seat is a short, slightly strenuous hike that provides incredible views across Edinburgh. Be sure to explore the hill fort at the peak, dating from around 2000 years ago. The mountain is actually an ancient volcano, which means you can tell everyone you hiked one!

whisky

Taste the local tipples on a gin or whisky tour

When you visit a city, you’ve got to try their local produce. Edinburgh is famous for its many tipples, with numerous local whiskies and of course Edinburgh Gin. Whatever your spirit of choice might be, there are a variety of tours and tasting sessions to choose from.

Snack on tasty treats from Edinburgh Farmer’s Market

Speaking of local produce, another great place to snack on tasty treats is Edinburgh Farmer’s Market. Browse their delicious range of fresh veg, cheese, chocolates and meat. If you don’t fancy any food, it’s worth a trip to see the fantastic handmade gifts, including candles, soaps and more.

Count the steps to the top of Scott Monument

An iconic Edinburgh landmark, Scott Monument stands in Princes Street Gardens. To climb to the top without stopping takes about five minutes, but with four floors to explore, it can easily take longer. Count how many steps it is to the top, and see which one of you gets it right! Once up there, enjoy beautiful views over the gardens.

Alleyway Edinburgh

Explore the hidden streets and alleys beneath the Royal Mile

Hiding beneath the lively Royal Mile lies an underground world waiting to be explored. When the Royal Exchange was built in the 17th century, instead of knocking the old houses down, the government used them as the new Exchange’s foundations. Many of the underground street entrances were closed up, but some residents continued living there, and the houses are amazingly well preserved. An exciting tour of the streets can be found at The Real Mary King’s Close.

Drink at the Sheep Heid Inn - the oldest pub in Scotland!

Edinburgh is full of historic pubs, but none quite so old as the Sheep Heid Inn. The site has held an inn since 1360, although the building seen today is said to be from the 18th century. Of course there’s an excellent range of food and drink, but this pub also holds a skittles alley. Perfect for a fun night of bowling.

Spook yourself on a ghost tour

In a city as old as Edinburgh, tales of ghosts and ghouls are rampant. Wickedly enticing, a ghost tour is a great way to spend an evening in the city. Walk the line between myths and facts as you gain fascinating historical insights. Many of the local tours have won awards, so there are lots of great picks to choose from.

Snap a selfie with your spirit animal at Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo is a nonprofit organisation run by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, supporting wildlife conservation worldwide. Home to over 1,000 rare and endangered creatures, you’re sure to find your spirit animal! The zoo recently welcomed a new herd of giraffes, and we partnered with them to create the Ultimate Giraffe Package.

Hotel Indigo Edinburgh Reviews

Sophie,

Cambridge

This hotel is such a great find. Its location cannot be beat and the rooms are incredibly nice. Great amenities (including complimentary mini bar) and great service. Would definitely stay here again!

Sue,

Newcastle upon Tyne

I stayed here overnight to see Justin Timberlake on his Man of The Woods Tour. We were greeted with the warmest welcome by the receptionist...genuinely helpful and friendly. We stayed in the Suite, which has everything I could possibly need. A FREE (well stocked) mini bar! Robes, Aveda toiletries, slippers, free calls, a very appreciated cafetiere with ground coffee and a lovely selection of teas. 30mins in and a welcome plate arrived with 5 good size desserts...gorgeous.

Room service was excellent and the breakfast was utterly delicious and brought to the room at no extra charge. The room was very large and spacious with a huge double bed, blissfully comfortable. When needed in the evening the staff pressed a button at reception and a taxi arrived within 2 minutes...Outstanding service!

I had such a fantastic stay here that I shall return in November and I'll be re-booking this Suite.

Micky,

Kingston upon Hull

Less than 10 mins walk from Waverley. Staff were very polite, helpful and friendly throughout our stay. Room was a good size with a great bathroom. Large shower, robes and Aveda products included. Fridge with free cold drinks. Good breakfast with plenty of choice. Both couples enjoyed and would stay again.

Daniel,

Bury

Really nice friendly boutique hotel. We didn't arrive until late but the hotel was more than happy to let us check in late. After checking in we also asked for some area recommendations, which again the staff were more than happy to give us. Our room was really nice and very clean, bed was comfortable and gave us a good night sleep. We stayed for two night and did not hear any noise from the hotel or any of the other guest. In a good location with only a short walk to the shops and restaurant/cinema ! If staying on Edinburgh I would highly recommend this hotel!

Ashley,

Sheffield

Stayed for one night, but very impressed. Receptionist was fantastic, very professional, helpful, good looking and immaculately presented. The room was excellent, very clean, bed comfortable and the shower was fantastic, hot and powerful.

Breakfast well worth the money, with attention to detail and served hot. The location is excellent with just a 10 minutes walk from the station and to Princess Street. I will definitely stay here again.

Great boutique hotel and great value for money. Wish I was staying for longer.

Dave,

Dunfermline

Had a one night stay here. The location is great, right beside a Tram Stop, 2 minute walk to St Andrews Square bus station, 15 min from Waverley Train station and short walk to main shopping and restaurants. Hotel was very clean & comfortable. Good Breakfast. Very friendly staff.

Lynn,

Falkirk

Really nice hotel in a fantastic location for train station, shopping and nightlife. Lovely rooms, with complimentary snacks and lovely Aveda toiletries in the room. Bed was really comfortable, breakfast was also excellent and the staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend this hotel to family and friends visiting Edinburgh.

Rob,

Melbourne

Visited the hotel and stayed 2 nights having stayed at the Indigo in London. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Lovely rooms, great service, very good location opposite the tram stop and bus routes.
Lovely bar and restaurant is on site if you prefer to stay close for dinner!

Scott,

Inverness

I stayed at Hotel Indigo for first time last week, the service from the reception, bar and restaurant staff was faultless. The room was very comfortable and the bed was the comfiest i have ever slept in. The Hotel is situated close to the Playhouse and only 5 minute walk from waverley station, there are several good bars and restaurants in the vicinity. A great Hotel in a good area.
